News Flash: New Environmentally Friendly Font Reduces Ink Consumption

Posted: December 18th, 2008, 5:25am EST by coupons

Are you someone who composes documents and prints a lot? Are you concerned about your ink consumption? Well, worry no longer - I’ve found a font for you that takes care of this! It is called the Ecofont, and works for both Mac and PC.

Recently developed by SPRANQ, this font was created with the hopes to increase environmental awareness; the font is said to use 20% less ink. Now if we can just use 20% less paper… we’d be set!

The font has an interesting look to it - almost giving the impression of bling.

    Hey, you can print bling?!?

This font omits part of the letter, effectively reducing the amount of ink on the page. Best of all, Ecofont is freeware and they accept donations. This font works best when you use OpenOffice, AppleWorks or Microsoft Word 2007 with a laser printer.

Are you ready to download Ecofont yet? What about other printer-friendly fonts, do you know of any? Do you know of any more fonts that look bling-ish? Feel free to share!

I have been in such a wonderful holiday spirit lately. It would be impossible not to be, what with all of the giving I’ve been fortunate to do. I know you all heard about (or participated in) the HP Magic Giveaway. After that, I was able to give food to a local shelter, and toys to another organization. And of course, we’re running yet another fun giveaway right now! I know that many of you are in the holiday spirit as well. It’s wonderful to see so many people posting like crazy on such a wide variety of topics!

Are You Still Using a VCR for VHS Tapes?

So what do all the cool kids want for Christmas this year? They want a VCR, of course! It’s such a hot product, since it’s been running for awhile. A VCR can play VHS tapes, you know! Thank goodness I finally have a VCR of my own! I have here the new Ion USB VCR from the folks at ThinkGeek!

EZ VHS Converter software lets you burn your videos to DVD, watch on your PSP, iPod or laptop computer. Exported MPEG4 video is compatible with select mobile phones and portable multimedia devices. Connect your VHS, VHS-C, or 8MM camcorder to the front panel jacks to backup your camcorder videos. When you’re finished archiving your videos to your computer, VCR 2 PC is the perfect VHS player for any room in the house. Some of the main features include:

    • Connects to Windows XP and Vista machines via USB 2.0 port.
    • Capture video at resolutions up to 720 x 480 (NTSC) or 720 x 576 (PAL).
    • Sends video uncompressed over the USB cable.
    • Burn Video to DVD Export video to iPod or PSP format.
    • Plug and play USB computer connection Standard RCA and composite outputs for connection to any TV or home theater system.
    • Standard RCA inputs for connecting video cameras.
    • Auto-tracking, variable speed slow motion, playback, and rewind.
    • Soft-touch, backlit buttons.

The Ion VCR is an excellent device. How else can you turn any of your old VHS movies into something you can watch on today’s technology? It’s so easy to use! If you’re planning to get a VCR anyway, make sure you pick this up to turn your VHS tapes into something more useful.

How Long Should Yahoo, Google or Microsoft Keep Your Personal Data?

Posted: December 18th, 2008, 3:11am EST by coupons

Yahoo announced today that they will be shortening the length of time they keep your personal data. This move makes their length of retention the shortest among any of their peers. Their previous standard was 13 months; a stark contrast to that of Google, who earlier this year announced they would anonymize personal data after 9 months, previously at 18-24 months.

While at first these companies had stated they can’t change how their systems keep personal data, in an about-face and through litigation it had become apparent their systems require change. Viacom’s lawsuit and the court ruling given to Google ordered that Viacom be allowed complete access to personal data; they requested unrestricted access to view every piece of log data YouTube retained. This information included usernames, IP addresses, videos uploaded, videos watched, comments and ratings… basically everything you do on YouTube. Because of the court order Google had no choice but to cough up the goods, regardless of how wrong it seemed. Thankfully, the Video Privacy Protection Act was there to save the day, and Viacom had to reduce their demand.

The EU is putting pressure on search companies to anonymize data at a point no greater than 6 months. Last week, Microsoft responded to the EU and offered up that same challenge to their rivals, stating “…it is imperative that all search companies adopt the same standard to truly protect people’s privacy.”

Important to note - any commitments these companies make about their data retention can be enforced by laws already in place in the United States.

Big deal, what does this mean and why should I care?

Everything you do on the internet is logged. Your searches, page views, clicks, the ads you’ve been served - your internet provider, your IP, the time of day - whatever possible demographic information can be retrieved. This isn’t meant to make you paranoid, but you need to be careful - be aware of the footprint you are leaving on the internet. Not only will questionable searches and websites be logged, you can make your computer susceptible to viruses and malware.

That’s scary. What can I do?

Unfortunately, creating a digital footprint is part of the deal you make when going on the internet. You ask for information and you get it, on the condition that the entity you’ve asked (and possibly others) will take information for themselves. You can reduce your tracks by doing a few simple things:

    • Delete your cookies and temporary files frequently. Browsers aren’t usually set to delete information on their own; you must give it the instruction to do so. With a few clicks, your browser can do this easily. Something you need to be aware of are the persistent cookies; these are the kind that stay no matter what you do, aside from setting fire to your machine - these may have to be permanently removed by an application designed to do so. A good tool here is knowledge, and finding out which of the sites that you visit are setting these persistent cookies so they are easier to locate and remove.
    • Keep your browser updated. Don’t give hackers the excuse to get your information. Keep up on any security or software updates for your browser. Case in point - the very recent critical Internet Explorer security flaw that has affected every single version since 5.01 (gee, how did they miss it for THAT LONG?!?). The thing about critical updates is the phrase that defines them. It means simply FIX NOW.
    • Don’t let your browser store your password! This is persistent information and could be exploited. Instead of using your browser to store passwords, use an encrypted spreadsheet program or an application to store the data. Some users have their application installed on a flash drive that follows them wherever they go.
    • Read the privacy policy on web sites you visit. Do they log your IP and send you ads based on your location? Do they sell any information from your user account? If you’ve ever wondered why your spam folder or junk email folder is full of… well, junk… you can bet a lot of it comes from the sites you visit who sell your information. Your real-world mailbox isn’t protected, either.

Do you have ideas on how to keep your information secure? Do you know of a great application or tool that will help others in doing this? Don’t keep it a secret, let us know!

A few weeks ago, I was given the opportunity to go on a shopping spree at Sears, using $500.00. I could do anything I wanted to, and decided to buy toys for kids who otherwise wouldn’t have any this Christmas. Now I have the chance to give one of you some toys, as well.

Many of the toys I found at Sears made me remember my own childhood. I know the kids who will receive the toys Ponzi and I bought would otherwise not have gotten them. I can think of no better way to spread joy than to give things away. Ponzi and I were like kids in a candy store, running through the aisles and checking everything out. We were literally giddy! When we dropped them off at the donation site, the people there were just as excited as we were.

Now IZEA is going to allow me to give you a gift bundle worth $500.00! There are three different bundles you can choose from if you win. You can choose:

    • LEGO Wonderland - A variety of LEGO toys and books.
    • Star Wars Smiles - Filled with Star Wars toys and games!
    • Family Game Night - Several different family board games.

You can enter up to three times! Here’s how:

    • Leave a comment stating which bundle you want, and why, in Receiving the Gift of Giving. Understand, it’s only on that post where your comments will count. Commenting here isn’t gonna do you much good, unless you really want to leave a comment here for another reason.
    • Post to your twitter account if you have one, making sure you include - #Sears @chrispirillo http://bit.ly/giftwish - and whichever bundle you desire in your tweet.
    • Make an entry in your own blog if you have one, making sure you link back to this particular post URL and mentioning which bundle you want (and why). I register most trackbacks after I’ve received at least one click from your permalink to mine.

So there you have it… another giveaway! Good luck to everyone!

You know my name, and you know how to find me. If you look at my blog, you know that I run WordPress as my blogging platform. I host my blog myself, and it works quite well for the most part. There is one plugin in particular that makes life much easier. The Viewzi Search Plugin provides a very visual way of searching the Web. Now, you can bring that experience to your own blog.

Viewzi Site Search (VSS) is a pilot program that takes the Viewzi search experience and embeds it on your website or blog. Your search results become highly visual, elegant and engaging!

With multiple Views to look at search results, visitors click 2-3 times more pages per search on average.

When you visit my website now, you will notice a new search box under the video. The view of results will superimpose instantly, without even having to reload the page. You can customize the way your search results display, in order to show you what is the most relevant to you. It makes it soooo much easier for you to find anything I’ve ever posted.

I love getting video feedback as a response to something I’ve done. It’s very cool when I’m able to show you guys a video that one of you have done and incorporate it into a video that I am doing. This video is one done by a person wondering why I don’t really talk about Creative’s products.

I’ve owned Creative products in the past, but I haven’t purchased any in quite a few years. I just haven’t found anything worth buying. Many years ago, I installed a Creative sound card though. Do you remember how cool it was to hear things come out of your computer? I even remember a piece of software called Dr. Sbaitso that allowed me to type in words and have the program repeat them to me. I used to giggle over typing in curse words, and hearing the computer cuss at me!

The Creative Zen Jukebox was a 60GB mp3 player. I bought it because at that point it was the only MP3 player on the market that had such a high capacity. It would also play .wma files, as well. Since then, I haven’t really purchased any Creative products since then. In my mind, none of them have been that interesting to me. I still have the hard drive out of that little piece of hardware.

The one thing that has always plagued Creative is their software. If I had to give them a grade on it, it would be a D. I always found it lacking. It wasn’t designed well, wasn’t clean, and wasn’t as integrated as it could have been.

Now that I’m a cross-platform kind of guy, and own an iPhone, I just don’t have a need to buy any Creative products. They haven’t really created anything that I would want to take a look at. Looking at their site, they have sound cards, speakers, and headsets… all of which I really don’t need. Even when I did, my old software experience with them just made me turn away from trying them out.

So now you know why I don’t own or use Creative products. Maybe many of you out there will follow up and let me know why you do or don’t use Creative products. Don’t just say they’re “awesome!” or “horrible!”. Tell me why you feel the way you do. I really want to know.

What Bluetooth Headset are You Using for Talking or Gaming?

Generally, I don’t like wearing wireless headsets. They just aren’t usually comfortable, and people who wear them around in public tend to come across as pompous. However, Sony sent me a new one to try out, so I thought I’d give it a go. This is their PS3 Bluetooth Headset.

The Official Bluetooth Headset for the PlayStation 3 was designed and optimized specifically for gaming use. This headset offers the highest-quality voice available, thanks to the High-Quality (HQ) mode, which implements various advanced voice technologies and noise-canceling.

When docked to the charging stand, the headset doubles as a desktop microphone. View larger.
techniques to provide crystal-clear talk quality. And thanks to the dual-microphone design, you get high-bandwidth voice recording and playback. So next time you’re in the middle of a heated online gaming session, you won’t have to worry that your allies don’t understand.

What’s nice about this one is not only the fact that it works with the PS3, but you can also use it with other bluetooth devices, such as your phone or your desktop computer. It was specifically designed for online game-play and voice commands, but works well with any other device you hook it up to.

When you put it in the cradle, it turns into a speaker device. You can hear audio out of the headset when you dock it, so you don’t have to continue a conversation with the headset stuck to your ear. It charges via mini-USB, which is great. The buttons are nice and big, and easily accessible.

As human beings, we have a few basic needs: food, water, shelter and an Internet connection. Ok, so maybe an Internet connection isn’t a basic need. Food, however, is something we cannot do without. If we ate nothing, we wouldn’t need anything else because we wouldn’t be alive. There are many people near you who have to worry about finding something to eat. In some cases, it’s not even that food is not accessible, it’s that it’s not affordable. Starvation doesn’t only happen in remote parts of Africa, like you see on television. It happens right in your town or city.

I encourage you to donate food or money to a local food shelter, to help feed people in your community who may be going hungry. Ponzi and I have done this in the past, and it’s always something that means a lot to us. If you want to help feed others in remote areas, you should check out The Wall. This site is very trustworthy, and 100% legit. It is part of the United Nations.

Once you make a donation on this site, you can upload a photo and comments to the Wall. This is a real chance for you to impact someone else’s life. That, I feel, is what being a human being is all about. Your legacy is how you impacted someone’s life.

Yeh I know it’s a little early to give up trying to find that perfect present, but I swear the stores are carrying less stock than usual this year. They were probably worried they’d be stuck with a lot of unsold stock in a bad economy. Also today was the last day at most online stores to order, have it shipped via standard shipping and have it arrive by Christmas. There’s still time to have stuff shipped by priority, 2nd day, next day, etc…, but just in case you’re shopped out, here are a list of online stores who offer gift certificates. I’ll be adding to this list over the next few days…

Posted: December 15th, 2008, 11:00pm EST by Chris

As a young teen, one Holiday season, my parents decided to spread the cheer to an underprivileged family in our area. We were to take a few kids out shopping with us, each of them was given a small stipend (with which to spend on gifts for their siblings). I remember that day vividly - never feeling more grateful for the things I had been given in seeing what others did not have.

So, when Sears offered to sponsor a $500 shopping spree under their ‘Don’t Just Give a Gift, Grant a Wish‘ effort, I didn’t think twice about what I wanted to do with the gift card. It’s all about the toys at Christmas - and even though we don’t have kids of our own, Ponzi and I both thoroughly enjoyed taking a trip across town and down memory lane as we tore through the “Toy Shop.” The goal: to find $500 worth of toys to give to a local donation center.

Now, before I continue, I must again point out that Sears gave me this opportunity. I received the $500 gift card from IZEA, but these experiences are 100% my own. What would *YOU* do with this $500 - spend it on yourself or on somebody else? I chose the latter.

We filled a shopping cart and a half with new toys and remakes of yesteryear. I remembered getting a set of magic tricks for Christmas one year, so I snagged a magic kit from the shelf. I also remembered getting lost with a Rubik’s Cube on Christmas morning, so that was another must-buy. Then there was a time I really wanted a microscope (I still remember my onion skin slide), so a little bit of science made its way into our “buggies” - that’s what Ponzi calls ‘em. Oh, and I can’t remember a single childhood Christmas that didn’t have a Star Wars something in it, so I snagged a few figurines, too.

We circled the Sears Toy Shop a few times, making sure we saw everything. Hulk Boxing Gloves: you don’t wanna see me when I’m angry! Chatterphone: rotary dial! Lincoln Logs: time to build something! Operation: don’t touch the sides! Let’s grab some Play-Doh, too - and we can’t leave without taking a few NERF balls with us. They make a portable Lite Brite now?! Man, I wish I was a kid again. For an hour, I felt like one.

Ponzi saw some toddler toys she used to chew on. Well, not HER toys - but the same kind. There were a few other baby items we thought would make wonderful presents for some kid this Christmas season. The game Don’t Break the Ice (which I had received as a birthday gift one year), a tea set, a couple of Barbie dolls, a Hannah Montana UNO card game (another childhood birthday present), a Mr. Potato Head, and… oh, so many memories. We weren’t just buying toys, you know? We were buying future memories for children - who will hopefully carry those memories into their adult lives.

It felt good. It felt really, really good.

Hours later, I walked into a local donation center and asked if they accepted toys. One guy asked: “Depends on what condition they’re in.” I told him they were brand new, and his eyes lit up like *HE* was a kid on Christmas morning. The whole place was buzzing with excitement. We unloaded the toys and I thought to myself: “I’ve gotta make this a new Christmas tradition.” So, thank you Sears, for giving *ME* the gift of happiness.

    But Wait, There’s More…

Don’t Just Give a Gift, Grant a Wish - Receipt

It’s time to share some of that happiness with some of you. Another contest is upon us (Official Rules). I’ve created three separate Sears gift bundles worth ~$500 apiece: LEGO Wonderland, Star Wars Smiles, and Family Game Night. These, much like the aforementioned shopping spree, were inspired by my own childhood Christmases. If you’d like to receive one of them, it’s super simple to qualify:

    1. Leave a comment on this post with the bundle you desire (and why).
    2. Post to your twitter account if you have one, making sure you include - #Sears @chrispirillo http://bit.ly/giftwish - and whichever bundle you desire in your tweet.
    3. Make an entry in your own blog if you have one, making sure you link back to this particular post URL and mentioning which bundle you want (and why). I register most trackbacks after I’ve received at least one click from your permalink to mine.

You can enter once by commenting, once by twittering, AND once by posting in your own blog (that’s three chances to win what you want). The winner will be selected at random, mind you. So, which one of these gift bundles do you want most?

For whatever it’s worth, I received the Millennium Falcon for Christmas when I was a kid - it was my very first Star Wars vehicle. I came close to buying it separately for myself, but couldn’t justify the expense (or figure out where to put it). My first LEGO kit was also a gift from Santa Claus.

I’ll also be using funds generated from this post to make further food bank deposits and donations to other charities. We’re all trying to make this a very Merry Christmas (Happy Holiday) for as many as possible.

    Christmas Window Decorations

I drew these last night (reverse, indoors) with Window Chalk Markers. You can barely see the bulbs in the lower portion of the window since we have the blinds open at the moment. I did my best with Ponzi’s caricature. At least I didn’t make her look like Abe Vigoda again! Oh, and apparently, I can’t draw a snowflake to save my life.

What kind of Christmas decorations do you usually put up? That is, assuming, you don’t keep them up year-round (please, please don’t be THAT person).

    Is Physics Fun?

We’ve talked about cool Physics-type utilities that are fun, such as OE Cake. Did you even realize how much fun Physics can be? There’s a new application that takes fun with Physics to a whole new level. This week during our GoToMeeting, one of the chatters decided to show off Fantastic Contraption.

Fantastic Contraption allows you to use axles and motion to make things go and reach different levels. Use the different tools to connect various parts, and make the pink ball get pushed into the pink victory zone. There are elements such as water tubes, forward and backward-rotating balls, and even wooden dowel-type rods.

Build a design using these components and then click the Start button to see if what you came up with will work. If it doesn’t, just delete whatever component you feel is the problem, and add something new! You can do this as many times as you need to in order to make your contraption go where it should.

You can literally spend hours on a level of this game, just creating the perfect contraption. It’s very cool to let your mind wander as you create, and then see the results of that when you pass a level. The game will help you to learn and understand more about physics, while having a great time. What more can you ask for?

What iPhone Apps Make You Smile?

Sometimes when I review an iPhone App, I tend to groan just a bit inwardly. There are just so many, you know? But this one just makes me smile. It’s no wonder the name of it is Smiles. It’s actually three games all wrapped into one fun time. You’ll find Zen, Drop and Avalanche.

SMILES is three great games with 14 different game modes. Created for players of all skill levels, the games are designed NOT to pressure you in to acting before you’re ready. Play at your own pace. Experienced players don’t have to wait. You can make moves right away! Extend combos and score big!

    • DROP is inspired by games like Bejeweled and Tetris. Make matches, break Ice and Rocks to score points. Twist your way to high scores with REAL GRAVITY!
    • ZEN is inspired by games like Solitaire and Mahjongg, with the depth of Sudoku. Light up the board to win.
    • AVALANCHE consists of the Drop style of play, but every new piece that falls is frozen. As the avalanche slowely creeps down the screen, your job is to match up regular pieces with the frozes ones to clear them out.

There’s nothing about this game not to love. It has extremely slick animations, very clean graphics, awesome art style and colors, and fun menus. This game is fun for kids of all ages, even ones as old as I am!

If you’re looking for a good, casual game, this is the one for you.

Food Poisoning Leading to Food Donation

Posted: December 12th, 2008, 4:48am EST by Chris

The other morning, I must’ve had some yogurt that was a bit past its prime. Tasted a bit tangy, but it’s yogurt - so I figured that was somewhat normal. Eh? Apparently, not-so-much. I’m guessing that was the culprit (still not sure).

What followed at a point thereafter was a somewhat-familiar bout of dizziness and what had to be one of the more violent series of regurgitations of my adult life. I’ve had food poisoning a couple times before (once, as a teenager - and once, not long after Ponzi and I met). If you’ve ever had food poisoning, you know what I’m talking about. It’s no picnic.

I’m feeling okay now - but I’m also feeling absolutely ROTTEN. I was supposed to speak at the DoItWithDrupal.com conference, as I had teased a few times before. Flight was booked, stage was set, and I was packed to go at 5am on Wednesday. My body was starting to clock out on Tuesday evening, and I wasn’t sure if I would be able to make it. Unfortunately, I didn’t make it - and spent seemingly as much time in the bathroom as I did in the bedroom.

Since Kat watches my schedule, she was able to get ahold of Jeff from Lullabot.com to let him know what was going on. I wasn’t sure how long it would last, but held hope that I could at least participate virtually. They were able to cover for me (much like I was able to cover for Giovanni at PodCamp a couple months back).

I’m sure the last of it left me yesterday afternoon. My body is on the mend, and I’ve been taking it slow with the food stuffs. I wanted to formally apologize to the Drupal community and for the attendees and organizers of the “Do It with Drupal” conference. It’s in their name that I’ll be donating a few hundred dollars worth of groceries to a local food bank tomorrow. No yogurt, though.

Top Ten Tips for An Effective BUSINESS Card

Posted: December 12th, 2008, 1:14am EST by coupons

Maura DesimoneMaura Desimone, from the graphic design firm New Axis in Art, was a little too late to enter into the HP Magic Giveaway, but here are some great tips if you’re creating or redesigning your business card.

    1. Have one Focal Point - You want to give people a reason to continue to look at it and draw them in.
    2. Use Interesting Contrasts - In color, graphics and/or typography
    3. Include your Contact Information
    4. Make it Easy to Read
    5. Use the 1-2-3 Flow Method - Try to keep these 3 elements: one primary, one secondary and one supporting informational type focal point. Having these elements will help to establish an easy pattern for your eye to follow.
    6. Include a Tagline - What is unique about your business in just a few words.
    7. Show Some Personality - The goal is to make it memorable, don’t be afraid to show your style.
    8. Use a High Quality or Unique Paper - It’s a tactile piece… it needs to feel nice in your hand. If it feels cheap, people will associate that feeling with your business.
    9. Use Some Graphic Elements that Visually Represent your Business - This will add visual interest.
    10. Keep it Updated, Keep it Fresh - Cards are cheap to print! Don’t scrimp on your most important “leave behind”.

People will use your business card to remember you. Think about printing cards for special advertising events for your business. How much does it cost to print them? The cost ranges from approximately $40 per 1000 to $200+ per 1000. Variants include paper stock and ink choices. Interested in having your business card designed professionally? Contact Maura through the New Axis in Art website for a quote.
