The Best Protective Case For The iPod

    Posted: June 28th, 2008, 2:48pm EDT
Author AvatarI had to get a case for my iPod Nano because it kept getting small scratches along the back of it. So I went to Staples and found the DLO HybridShell case for $15. There were others there that cost $20 and $25, but I decided on this one for one reason only, the non-slip back. If you're an owner of the a light iPod such as the Nano or Shuffle, you will know that it's very easy to forget your head is attached to earbuds which are then attached to your iPod sitting on your desk. A slight yank of the head back, and your iPod tumbles to the floor. This case helps prevent this by gripping to the surface, making it less likely for you to break your iPod. I just love simple things that make a huge difference.

Fix for slow scrolling with Firefox 3

    Posted: June 28th, 2008, 2:43pm EDT
Author AvatarAfter writing a previous post, 'Scrolling slow with Firefox 3', i received many comments about how other people are experiencing the same problem of pages scrolling slow with Firefox 3. Then, a commenter named Sammy posted a link to a fix...a very simple fix. Apparently, the problem is caused by some websites which have large fixed background images. Blog.exe did have a large fixed background image, and scrolled slow. Now, I've changed the background to something a bit smaller, so scrolling is now smooth. Please note that this should only be a temporary fix, and you may experience some changes in the way some pages are viewed. Once Mozilla have fixed this problem, everything should be reverted back to it's original state. Also, this is a little risky...if something goes wrong, it could potentially mess up Firefox...i don't know whether it could for sure, and i don't think it would, but just to be safe, back-up everything you edit. This fix worked for me, without any noticeable differences in the way pages were viewed, except the scrolling was much better. However, it disables the ability for Firefox to scroll with fixed background images. I did not notice a difference in viewing pages despite this, though, except for smoother and faster scrolling. However, it should still only be a temporary fix, and everything should be reverted back to it's original state once the problem has been fixed by Mozilla. I did not notice a difference in viewing pages despite this, though. Here is the link to the forum where the fix was written: http://thenonhacker.deviantart.com/journal/18918994/. Everything is explained there. So, thanks Sammy! Did this fix work for you? Have you got an easier fix? Please share your thoughts and leave a comment.

Author AvatarA former teen mom rings in with commentary about the teen pregnancy pact...
June 27, 2008 | In 1992, the closest thing my daughter had to a father was my best friend, Alice Moore. Alice and I met as 15-year-old debate partners in Boise, Idaho. When we were both 18, we moved 3,000 miles across the country to start our freshman year at Wesleyan University together, along with my then 2-year-old daughter, Sydney, whom Alice had known since she was only a few days old. The three of us shared an apartment together in Seattle over summer vacation when Alice and I were 20; after college, we moved to San Francisco and, along with Alice’s then-boyfriend, split the rent on an apartment in the Richmond district for another two and a half years. Today, Sydney and I live in Brooklyn, N.Y.; Alice is a couple hours away in New Haven, Conn.

Alice was the first person I thought of when I heard the news of the so-called pregnancy pact at Gloucester High School in Massachusetts, a story that has been grabbing headlines this week from here to Brazil. ...

How-to: Display a screensaver as a desktop wallpaper/background in Windows

    Posted: June 28th, 2008, 2:12pm EDT
Author AvatarWant to have an animated desktop wallpaper without buying Windows Vista Ultimate just for DremeScene? Well, there are 2 methods of achieving that...2 FREE methods. Both methods allow you to run a screensaver as your desktop background. Sadly, the outcome basically leaves your desktop useless, as you cannot drag/drop any items or see any items on the desktop...you're basically running a screensaver normally, but with the taskbar, sidebar and windows visible on top of it. If you use your desktop regularly or use icons on there, then this may not be for you...you'll just have to try it and see if it works for you. You could try using ObjectDock, a free application which lets you keep icons and shortcuts, as well as useful little widgets/docklets, on a Mac-style dock; that way, the dock still comes up over the screensaver in the background with all your shortcuts and icons...and it looks pretty cool. Read up about ObjectDock here: http://www.lockergnome.com/blogexe/2008/06/28/mac-style-dock-for-windows-objectdock/. Right, let's get down to it. Please note that each of these methods work for all versions of Windows. Method 1 - The manual method. This method requires you to do everything manually everytime, but I'm going to tell you how to do it anyway, just in case. 1) Open up a 'command prompt'. Open it as an administrator if you are using Vista. To do this, go to the 'start menu', click 'run', then type 'cmd'. Hit enter. To run as an administrator, go into 'all programs' instead, click 'accessories', right-click 'command prompt' and click 'run as administartor'. Click continue on the UAC notice. 2) On the command prompt, type in the name of the screensaver you want, followed by '.scr', followed by a space, followed by '/p65552'. Hit enter. It should look like this: 'aurora.scr /p65552' (without the quotes). You can also type in other names of screensavers, such as 'ribbons.scr' or 'mystify.scr'. 3) To end the screensaver, press 'ctrl, alt + delete' and bring up the task manager. Then, on the applications tab, end the screensaver task. Method 2 - The automatic method. I stumbled across an application which does this automatically for you, and even has a nice GUI! Download link: http://www.installationexcellence.com/downloads/AnimatedDesktop.zip. Just download it, unzip it, run it, and away you go! This method is a lot easier, and achieves much more desirable results. So, there you have it - 2 methods on how-to display a screensaver as a desktop wallpaper in Windows. Just try them out and see which method, if any, works for you. Remember, if you like using your desktop for icons and shortcuts, try ObjectDock. What do you think of these methods? Got any more/better applications that do the same thing, maybe in another operating system other than Windows? Did these methods work for you? Please share your thoughts and leave a comment.

Mac-style dock for Windows - ObjectDock

    Posted: June 28th, 2008, 2:11pm EDT
Author AvatarDo you want your desktop icons out of the way? Or maybe you're just looking for an application similar to the 'Mac dock' , but that can run on Windows. Well, try ObjectDock! ObjectDock allows you to have a stylish dock hidden away at the side of the screen, or completely off the screen if you want, that contains all of your desktop shortcuts and icons. It can also contain all of your open windows, just like the dock in Mac OS does. If it is hidden off the screen, you can bring your cursor to the edge of the screen, and up it comes with all of your shortcuts. You can have a completely clear desktop, and it also increases productivity to a certain extent. It's also a very handy thing to have, and looks very nice too. There are also some built-in 'docklets' you can have on your dock, such as a time docklet, a weather docklet, and a start button docklet, basically taking over the functionality of the taskbar! You can also download more docklets and themes for the dock - it is highly customizable. You can adjust all sorts of settings, such as 'roll-over' effects, size and shape of the icons. It's just a neat storage place for your icons and shortcuts, and is a handy little application. It also works with all versions of Windows, including Vista. ObjectDock is completely free, although there is 'ObjectDock Plus', which you have to pay for, which adds multi-monitor support, taskbar integration and multiple docks, amongst other new features. However, the free version has enough functionality to keep it's place on my computer, so why not give it a try? You can download it here: http://www.stardock.com/products/ObjectDock/. Have you got ObjectDock? What do you think of it? Are there any more free dock applications for Windows out there? Please share your thoughts and leave a comment.

Why I Like the Wii More Than Xbox 360

    Posted: June 28th, 2008, 12:17pm EDT
Author AvatarI am really glad I decided on the Wii over the Xbox 360. Here are the reasons:
    • The price is $100 cheaper.
    • The system comes with games, actually several games on with the Wii Sports game disc.
    • It also comes with built in wireless so no need to buy an adapter separately.
    • I get exercise when I play.
    • Simple controllers don't have 50 million different buttons to worry about.
    • Multiplayer games are more fun and the Wii makes them the most fun.
    • Free online play enables me to play all the online games I want without paying a fee.

Update to my father's computer problem

Author AvatarWhat my father's computer looks likeAt the left, you're seeing a picture of my father's computer. It's a Packard Bell iStart-model. If you want to know WHAT happened to my father's computer, please search for the other post. Sorry, I'm to lazy to post a link right now... If you want to know what was being repaired, stay reading here... So, my father brought the computer to our nearest computer shop. He gave them the computer, and my father thought it would take them at least three to four days. Well, it wasn't. They repaired the problem in just ONE day. That's right, ONE. So, what broke? Just one little part, but it's a very important part of the computer. It makes the processor working, and the hard drive spinning. It makes the DVD-burner burn all your home movies, and makes the diskette drive (if you still own one) do magic things (for the time diskettes were popular... so... never mind.). Do you already know what broke? Some people already sent in comments, and they were indeed right: it was the power block. Power blockThat's right, one of these things. And it's unbelievable, but the computer shop made my dad (which doesn't has any base knowledge about the inside of a computer, so he believes like everything he's being told), pay $150 for it!
    • $50 for the power block, which is pretty much for a pretty cheap thing like that
    • $50 working money (Dutch tax for the employees)
    • $50 taxes
So, that's pretty much. And probably, they even built in the wrong power block, because the receipt says "Silent motor" but the motor is even less silent than the previous one, and that was already pretty loud. I'll post a video about this on YouTube one day to let you hear the difference. So, thanks for all your tips, it really helped us getting this computer repaired, and I hope I'll see you all later, OK! Cya! Daan.

    Google Takes Over The TV

    Posted: June 27th, 2008, 9:30am EDT
Author AvatarGoogle - the one trick pony according to Steve Ballmer, has anoher toy for the masses to play with. Called Google Media Server, the Windows only software will change the way we interact with our TV now and in the future. In their description Google says that Google Media Server works in conjuntion with Google Desktop, which must also be installed on your computer. The article also states:
In the old days, we used to watch a simple device called a television. Nowadays, all the stuff worth watching and listening to tends to be stored on or accessed through a computer. To help remedy this, we are pleased to release the Google Media Server. Google Media Server is a Windows application that aims to bridge the gap between Google and your TV. It uses Google Desktop technology such as Desktop gadgets for the administration tool and Google Desktop Search to locate media files. All you need is a PC running Google Desktop and a UPnP-enabled device (e.g. a PlayStation 3). At the touch of a button, you can then:
    • Access videos, music, and photos stored on your PC
    • View Picasa Web Albums
    • Play your favorite YouTube videos
According to another source, the one disappointment is that Google Media Server does not support Linux nor Mac OS. There is hope that Google may remedy this situation soon. So it does look like this one trick pony is going to learn more tricks. I think Microsoft is going to be extremely sorry to see Bill Gates leaving Steve Ballmer in Bill's place. Google is probably jumping up and down knowing their competition is being lead by a man that even blew the Yahoo deal. :-) From Google Source. Other Review Source.

FireTune For Firefox - Have You Tried It?

    Posted: June 27th, 2008, 9:06am EDT
Author AvatarFireTune for Firefox is a free optimization tool that claims to improve the performance of Firefox, depending on the connection and computer choice you select. After downloading Firetune, which is small at 1MB, you are presented with a screen asking you to check which of the settings applies to you. I chose fast connection and fast computer and clicked on the Tune Up button. There is also an option to restore your previous settings if some thing goes wrong. According to the Firetune web site it states:
FireTune for Mozilla Firefox v1.x / 2.x / 3.x was developed for an easy and fast optimization of your browsing experience with Firefox. It is based on a collection of popular and well working optimization settings used and tested by the experts. Usually you have to optimize Firefox manually, which can be time consuming and difficult for the novice user. FireTune helps you here - it includes all the performance optimizations. The only thing you must do is: make your selection. FireTune does the work for you. FireTune: downloaded and used on more than 2.5 million computers! ??In most of all cases you'll notice an improved browsing speed after optimizing Firefox with FireTune.
I'm going to try this for a few weeks to see if I notice any performance improvements. I'm using Firefox 3 with only 6 add-ons.?? If you have used Firetune let us know what you think. Comments welcome. Source.

    ATi Brings Back A Winner

    Posted: June 27th, 2008, 8:59am EDT
Author AvatarFor the last couple of years, there has been a huge hole in the video card market. It was 2006 when the last ATi All-in-Wonder was produced, and nVidia had discontinued their similar offering before that. With the huge increase of Home Theater PCs being built these days the removal of this type of product was all wrong. Now ATi has announced the latest in the All-in-Wonder series, combining an HD3650 video card with the TV Wonder tuner card, for a list price of $199. While not the fastest GPU around, the 3650 will do a very good job of taking care of the HTPC and media center market segment, while the choice for the gamer who also watches movies would be a 4xxx series card and a separate TV Wonder card. For those who are using a small form factor box to build the HTPC, this will be a beautiful thing, because the heat output of the 3650 GPU will be much easier to mitigate. The PCI Express 2.0-based All-in-Wonder HD card,?? includes unified decoder technology for hardware-accelerated Blu-ray playback, and records and captures both HDTV and analog signals using ATI Theater 650 Pro hardware MPEG-2 encoding. Dual DVI connectors are included, and HDMI support has also been added. HDCP support, however, has apparently not been included. AMD's Catalyst Media Center provides a front end to scheduling recordings, while a second bundled AMD LIVE! "Entertainment Suite CD" allows a user to access the DVR capabilities over the Internet with a broadband connection. In the announcement from ATi, the door was left open when the question of faster GPUs paired with the TV Wonder. It may happen, and that would bring the raw speed of GDDR5 memory to the HTPC system, making it much easier to do those things that stretch the abilities of lesser GPU/CPU combinations. It will also make small form PVRs easier to build, as the combo card will free up an additional, much needed slot for an additional tuner. - Technorati Tags: ATi - All-in-Wonder - PVR - HTPC - AMD Live! ??

Do you want a boy or a girl?

    Posted: June 27th, 2008, 8:45am EDT
Author AvatarA lot of couples hope for a certain sex while trying to get pregnant.?? Often people say that they wish they could actually pick.?? That futuristic science may be closer that you think.
Now, doctors at Houston's Baylor College of Medicine are conducting a "sex selection" study that will allow couples to make that wish come true -- letting them actually pick their baby's gender. ??
The study took nine years to get approval; and the test subjects have to fill out forms declaring why they want a boy over a girl (or vice versa).?? Scientists want to see people's reasoning behind the decision before releasing the procedure to the public.
But one recent survey conducted by the University of Illinois at Chicago found 59 percent of women would not use sex selection even if it were free. "I would never opt for this procedure," one woman told ABC News. "I think it's [childbirth] one of the world's greatest surprises."
When happens if the procedure became available for everyone and the majority of the world decides to have boys (or girls).?? I think the process could potentially cause a lot of controversy and problems throughout the world.?? If the process becomes non random, the ratio of males to females will differ and having an abundance of either could cause problems.?? Too many females could lead to over population and too little females could cause an under population. I want to hear your opinions.?? Would you opt in for this selection process??? Would you pick a boy or a girl??? Is taking the random our of random mating a problem for society??? What will be the implications down the line? Comments welcome, Justin Capasso

Getting the Complete Deadwood Series DVDs? Don't!

    Posted: June 27th, 2008, 7:02am EDT
Author AvatarI just noticed that the compete series of Deadwood is now available as a Complete Seasons 1-3 DVD Set for nearly $180 but you can still get the individual DVD Sets for Season 1, Season 2, and Season 3 for under $40 each! Worse, according to multiple reviews there is supposedly no added content or value in the Complete Seasons 1-3 DVD Set. So if you were planning to get the DVDs, do yourself a favor and order the individual seasons. If you haven't watched Deadwood you missed a fantastic show that came to an end far too early. Everything about the show was amazing, down to every detail of the scripting, acting, costumes, and sets. It's supposedly the attention to that detail that burned out Producer David Milch on the series. I still hold out hope for a Deadwood Movie though it doesn't appear that will ever happen.

Today???s Sinking Economy: Predicted a Half Century Ago

    Posted: June 27th, 2008, 6:15am EDT
    Author Avatar

In the 1950s Khrushchev banged a shoe on a lectern and vowed that America was going to destroy herself from the inside. Now a half a century later his prediction is on the verge of being fulfilled. The Middle Eastern countries have also sworn to destroy the United States but lacking the military power to attack us directly have left it in the hands of their extremists and oil magistrates to do for them.

If you doubt these facts just look around you. First we have oil companies who cry that they are only making a 7 percent profit and do not care that 7 percent of a billion dollars far surpasses a 7 percent profit for a company only making a couple of million a year and totally eclipses the 2 percent the average American can count on for an annual raise. Then you look at the government who since the 1970???s oil embargo has failed to act responsibly and build more oil refineries, to refine the crude oil we receive, or even better use the funds that they waste to seek alternative sources of fuel that would liberate us from the need for foreign oil. So, given that what do we face today?

This morning oil on the open market reached $141.00 and CNN reported that they expected that amount to reach $170.00 a barrel before the end of summer. $170 a barrel equates out to $5.00 a gallon at the pumps. This was then minimized by stating that this would not be the end and that we could expect to see gasoline reach $7.00 a gallon by the year 2010. That is only 18 months from now. If this trend does continue we must fact the fact that the price of fuel, on which our economy thrives, could well reach its breaking point of $10.00 a gallon sometime in the next 4 to 5 years.

Why do I use $10.00 a gallon as a critical measure? It is because economic analysts have stated that if oil reaches this benchmark the American economy cannot survive. This is because the price of food, heating, cooling, clothing, video games, everything would go up accordingly and it is unlikely that wage increases could even begin to come close to this precipitated rise. That in turn means that people, who are already finding ways to cut back, will cut their spending back on extras even further thus causing the closure of restaurants, manufacturing plants, and retail outlets in a never before precedented way.

This last week alone this trend has been seen in the cancellation of some 180+ flights a day by American Airlines in an effort to curb costs that could force them out of business. GM and Chrysler found themselves devalued to junk bond status as they borrow more money to try to stay afloat and tried and true Dow Jones Chemicals announced another 40% increase in the wholesale price of their products which follows a 20% increase just last month. Scary? You???re right it is scary. Who is to blame? We the American people must accept a large portion of that blame. It is we ourselves who have been unable to tame the greed for more and better of everything from cars to computers to video games. We are the ones who think we must drive a huge SUV that could hold nine just to drive our daily commute from destination A to destination B. We could never have been satisfied with driving that little 4 banger. After all only the poor drive such vehicles.

Our selfishness aside, it is also the fault of the current administration???s war mongering policies that have forced us into a national debt so huge it will take years to recover. As a result, of that there are no extra reserves in the treasury to help bail out our economy and each of will be forced to learn how to survive without the extras that we take for granted as our right. We could even find ourselves in a worse state than the country was during the 1930 great depression. If so we will find that our country has been forced to its knees not by terrorist bombs but by their control of the oil that our country needs to survive.

What is my point? It is simply this, the predictions and hatred by our enemies may well bring America to its knees but we don???t have to lose hope. Our country was founded on faith in a God who is bigger than we are, who holds our destiny in the palm of His hand and who knows the number of hairs on our head. It was also founded on a principle of working together for the common good.

So, while it may be too late to prevent the current mortgage crisis, the credit crisis, the soaring cost of food, etc.??from hitting us hard it is not too late to work together to find a solution that will limit the duration of the pain that we are all sure to endure. I really don???t think that it much matters who we elect as our next president, even though I will vote for Obama, because there is just too much that needs to be corrected. However, according to news reports around the world it seems that other countries will look more favorably upon Obama than they will McCain. They view Obama as a moderate who is willing to use diplomacy to solve world crisis whereas they view McCain, who vows to stay in Iraq for another 100 years, as yet another warmonger along the same lines as our current president.

Given that alone I pray that Obama can really make the difference he would like to make. If not, don???t give up the faith folks, let???s just put our heads together and find a way to decrease our dependence on foreign oil and restore our economy to a world wide force to be reckoned with.

There is a "go" button on the bottom left-hand corner, which gives you an option of: Help & Feedback, Control panel, invite friends, a flickr app(not flickr itself, its a specially designed app), g.ho.st mail, Recent, Tagged things, My Logins, News feeds, all programs, Ghost services, Web disc drives, and I am getting started. There are also games to g.ho.st. There are Arcade games, Sports games, and Action games. Crappy quality, but its OK. Now, off to the browser. I have NEVER, in my whole life, seen a slower browser than this one. it Makes dial-up look like FiOS. And I know most of you are like bah w.e. you are just being overreactive, but seriosuly, if you have ANY flash in a website, it take 1-2 minutes, and i'm on FiOS. They need to work on the browser SO badly it just needs a new one. g.ho.st review: 9.5/10 (browser sucks, feels like dial-up)

Mozilla Keeping Tabs On Your Usage

    Posted: June 27th, 2008, 4:14am EDT
Author AvatarUsers of Firefox and Thunderbird, take note, you can no longer slam Microsoft for its practices of having applications phone home with statistics. Reported on Reddit, and later by Adrian Kingsley-Hughes on his ZDNet column, it seems that Mozilla products are phoning home daily with some facts about you and your usage of the product. Someone has analyzed the messages, and AKH has lined it out for us
I found this out a few days after I decided to start using Thunderbird and created strict firewall rules as a precaution. I noticed that Thunderbird would, for no reason at all, sometimes try to contact a server over SSL. I looked up the ip address 63.245.213.32 and found it belonged to Mozilla. On researching the problem further I found that the cause of the connection is a feature that cannot be disabled from any menu, only the about:config configuration page. Look up extensions.blocklist.enabled for more information. It???s present in Firefox also and is enabled even if all the options are disabled through the menus. What this tells Mozilla each day: - IP address - What time you were using the product - What exact version number you were using - If you are using any of the plugins or addons sent in the disabled list - Total number of active users of their software
AKH shows a Mozilla notice of what is happening and how to disable it ??? along with his statement that he is not worried about it. I probably wouldn???t worry about it either, however, if this was so innocuous, why did Mozilla not have a pop-up come up during the install process, to advise the user, and allow for disabling if wished. This will undoubtedly cause some level of concern with some users, and could have completely been avoided by providing the information beforehand. Are some of the programmers getting lazy, or do they believe that the Mozilla reputation precludes any sort of notification? Vista cannot be as bad as everyone says

    Posted: June 27th, 2008, 3:57am EDT
Author AvatarI received my first copy of Windows Vista Business about a week before the actual launch, from the power together campaign.?? Since then I have bought a second copy of Vista Business for my laptop.?? I have suffered from a rare BSOD on my Vista PC; but that happened with XP as well. Recently a list of ten reasons why Vista is not that bad was published, and the first item on the list was:

    1. It's more secure than Windows XP. After being implicitly responsible for botnets and security breaches through the incredible popularity of their Windows XP, Microsoft went back and made sure Vista is more secure than its predecessor. And it is. According to security firm PC Tools, Vista had 639 unique threats over a six-month period, whereas XP had 1021. This came from much internal restructuring under the hood, but there's a chance that it might be due to Vista being a smaller target than XP for malware as well.??
Is Vista more secure as XP? I would argue no, however I would say the XP and Vista are about the same when it comes to security. I am a huge fan of Vista; I am not saying it is perfect because everything has problems.?? What I am curious to know is who uses Vista??? If you use it, do you like it??? o you hate it and avoid it at all costs??? What are the major drawbacks from your point of view? I always hear people in the live.pirillo.com chatroom saying how much they hate Vista; but no one ever stands up for their claim. Here is why I like Vista: it looks great, it runs all the software I need it to (games, browsers. music players, movie players, word processors) and the ease of use functions are very user friendly (search, for example). I want to hear your opinions on Vista; but I do not want to hear how my point of view if incorrect.

    Google's Mobile Phone Locator

    Posted: June 27th, 2008, 3:35am EDT
Author AvatarGoogle is testing a new service called Mobile Phone Locator.?? It works even if the phone making the connection doesn't have a GPS equipped. Using the technology, dubbed "My Location," simply requires pressing zero on a mobile handset equipped with the new software. The sender's location shows up as a blue dot on Google's mobile maps. The tracking system isn't set up to collect a user's phone number or any other personal information that would reveal a person's identity and as a safeguard, the feature can be turned off at any time by simply clicking on a link in the help menu. Unlike GPS, Google's tracking feature works while handsets are indoors. "My Location" also drains less power from a phone's battery than a GPS receiver does. On the downside, Google's service isn't as precise as GPS. In most instances, Google hopes to get within one-quarter to three miles of a user's location ??? close enough to provide helpful "neighborhood-level" information, Lee said. By knowing more about a mobile phone's location, Google conceivably could make more money displaying ads from nearby businesses hoping to lure in more customers. I'm not so sure how this will go over with customers.?? People today expect much more accuracy than 3 miles.?? Especially considering that the GPS capable devices are accurate within feet.?? The only practical purpose I see would be to maybe find the general area where a run away teen may be located at.?? Besides, isn't there another company that advertises a service that will locate where the cell phones on the account are located??? With much more accuracy? Your thoughts?

    Running Linux Apps From Windows?

    Posted: June 27th, 2008, 2:50am EDT
Author AvatarEveryone knows the WINE application, to run Windows applications on Linux, has taken 15 years to reach revision level 1.0. Either doing things in the opposite direction is easier, or there has been a much greater effort put forth, because the Ulteo Virtual Desktop does just that. It is now possible to run Linux applications from within a Windows Environment. It also seems fairly simple, and no major hacking is involved. from Freeware Genius
Description: Ulteo Virtual Desktop installs a virtual Linux environment inside Windows. This free program shows up as a panel inside the Windows desktop and allows you to access Linux applications within Windows with little effect on performance, enabling users to run both Windows and Linux apps simultaneously and to switch between them at will. For those who would like to run Linux inside Windows ???Ulteo Virtual Desktop??? provides a virtual Linux environment inside Windows. Ulteo is based on Debian Linux and comes pre-bundled with a wide range of Linux apps, including Firefox, OpenOffice, KPdf, Kopete, Skype, Thunderbird, Enigmail, GIMP, Digikam, Inkspace, Scribus, and many others. Why run Linux in Windows?: I am assuming that you have a need to access both Windows and Linux apps or, like me, you have the desire and/or curiosity to run Linux applications. Or perhaps you would like to learn Linux or want to use it because you are looking into it as a replacement for Windows. Having the Linux environment inside Windows will save the time spent switching between operating systems and will circumvent the need for messing around with partition tables and other technical details (and, of course, let???s not forget the sheer coolness factor!). Here are more notes on this program: Downloading/Installing: once you get the 500 meg installer downloaded installing it is a breeze; however it will take up some 6 gigs on your hard drive, so make sure you have the space for it. Once installed (does not even require a reboot), the program will show up as a panel on top of your screen, and you can simply run the application you need to use from the Ulteo panel and its window will show up like any other Windows application.Performance: is very good, from my experience, but of course this is difficult to measure objectively. The Developers state that this software doesn???t run ???traditional virtualization software???, and that instead they built it using ???a special Linux kernel patch called coLinux that achieves great performance, close toa native installation on the PC???. The virtual file system: this is a 5 gig virtual file system that lives in a file (C:Program FilesUlteoVirtual Desktoposvdisk ). What you see as a user is a Linux file system that can also access the root (C:) and ???My Documents??? folders in your Windows filesystem. You can thus easily transfer documents back and forth across the two OS???s. Also note that the Linux vdisk can be both resized or mounted into Windows (see the FAQ for info on this). Access to your computer???s resources: Ulteo virtual desktop supports sound and is able to print from your regular printer. The Linux apps can access the internet (no proxy support but it???s promised), and I am assuming that they can also use the other hardware resources (e.g. CD/DVD drives, etc.) Anyone who was around about 10 years ago, and was at all curious about other operating systems, might recognize the methods described above as the same methods used by the BeOS crossover system, which would allow the user to boot into Windows 98, then click on an icon, and go to BeOS, which was contained inside what appeared to the casual user as one very large file in the Windows root directory. It allowed people to see another way of doing things, and gave many a taste of what was to come ??? back then it was no simple task to set up Linux on a computer ??? the user interface was not nearly as friendly, and the hardware compatibility list was extremely short. The live CDs and DVDs have done much to help adoption of the Linux flavors, but there are lots of machines that do not work well under the live disk, yet work very well with the product installed. Convincing the casual user that this was the case was less than easy, and many did not want to trash their Windows setup to take the chance. Now we have another method for easing these cautious souls into the Linux fray. - Technorati Tags: Ulteo Virtual Desktop - Linux - crossover - BeOS - simple setup - casual use - non-dedicated setup

This is in the Pro version which has dictionaries in numerous languages. A spell checker for Internet Explorer users can be downloaded from ieSpell. I recommend EditPad Lite without reservation. It is used almost daily on my laptop. EditPad Pro is on my desktop. The two programs are efficient and will find their way to your 'must-have' list. Best of all, the Lite version is free. A Cell Phone Law for California

    Posted: June 27th, 2008, 12:15am EDT
Author AvatarCalifornia joins other states in having cell phone legislation: "SAN FRANCISCO ??? On July 1, California will become the largest state to ban unlimited cellphone use by drivers. The law prohibits drivers under 18 from talking on the phone, and it requires older drivers to use a hands-free headset." link: More states say cellphones and driving don't mix Accident statistics clearly indicate that multitasking in a contributing factor in accidents. The irony is that, as California introduces this safety legislation, Chrysler is developing the Uconnect Web system to place internet access in cars. If there is internet access in cars, it would seem that this is even a greater distraction for drivers than talking on the cell phone or sending text messages. It begs the questions to firms like Chrysler as to why a service is developed which is going to meet prohibitive legislation. Catherine Forsythe

12-Year-Old Vermont Girl Missing: Did she Meet Someone from MySpace?

    Posted: June 26th, 2008, 11:16pm EDT
Author Avatar 12-year-old Brooke Bennett vanished after being dropped off to meet a friend. She apparently lied to her family about where she was going. The family and police have discovered that she was, in fact, going to meet up with someone she had met on MySpace.
Surveillance camera footage from the Cumberland Farms store showed Brooke being dropped off by her uncle and cousin at a local convenience store. They then drove off. The footage showed Brooke walking away from the store by herself. That was the last time she was seen. A family member searching for her Thursday found items belonging to her near Route 65 that were similar to what she had been wearing, prompting an intensive search by police and dogs in the area.
And this, folks, is why I am an "overprotective" Mom. Yes, my daughter knows right from wrong. I'm sure Brooke does, as well. Yes, I talk to my child about the dangers that can be lurking online. I'm sure Brooke's parents did the same. There are some sick individuals in this World, who will do anything they can to get to our children. They lie so well, many kids have no clue that their newest BFF is actually a pervert. There are stories all over the news, covering things like "The young girl went to meet up with what she thought was another young teenaged girl...". It's sickening. My daughter butts heads with me. She occasionally throws her hands up and yells "Why dont you TRUST me?". I calmly remind her that it is not her I don't trust. It's the potential for insanity I don't trust. I don't suffocate her. She is allowed to do many things, and tests her freedom regularly. One example of me saying no would be when she wanted to ride her bike to WalMart not long ago... alone. Our WalMart is four miles away, across a major highway. I'm sorry. She's 13. She's not going to ride alone four miles, no way... no how. I know every password to all of her online activities, such as her email and MySpace. I rarely use them. If I suspect something isn't quite right, I will check. I feel that is my job as a parent. Do you remember the old TV ad that asked "It's 10:00. Do you know what your child is doing?". I know where my daughter is. I know who she is with, and I know what they're doing. In this day and age, it's just good parenting to make those things your business.

    Please Don’t Emulate This!

    Posted: June 26th, 2008, 11:00pm EDT
Author AvatarAfter doing a bit of looking around this morning, I came across this small blurb, and was amazed. First, I was amazed at the non-action, then I was befuddled by the incredibly stupid reasoning behind it.
??Serena Williams would vote for Barack Obama if she could. Don't even ask Venus Williams what her political leanings are. The Williams sisters, vocal on so many issues from fashion to gender equality and equal pay for women, say they're not allowed to vote because of their religion. The sisters, who have 14 Grand Slam singles titles between them and are among the most recognizable athletes in sports, are Jehovah's Witnesses. After their first-round wins at Wimbledon, both were asked about the Nov. 4 presidential election. "I feel that what I do in tennis isn't really political," Venus said after her 7-6 (5), 6-1 win over British wild card entry Naomi Cavaday on Tuesday. The work she does for UNESCO and other agencies was about helping people, she said, "I don't see it as political. I don't vote." Younger sister Serena said she was "excited to see Obama out there doing his thing." "I'm a Jehovah's Witness, so I don't get involved in politics. We stay neutral. We don't vote," she said. "So I'm not going to necessarily go out and vote for him. I would if it wasn't for my religion."
I???ve personally known several Jehovah???s Witnesses, and, other than the fact that they will not salute the flag (referring to the Old Testament scripture about graven images), they have has no other problems with politics, other than not being really eager to discuss leanings. In high school I had the opportunity to discuss this with those my age, and their parents. Though I never knew (but could guess) their party affiliations, it was made clear that they voted every time the opportunity arose. That would seem to blow the religious restrictions out of the water. Unwillingness to discuss leanings is a personal choice, and should be respected. Speaking out, and stating that you don???t vote is stupid to the n-th degree. It shows a lack of commitment to country, and a poor judgement from someone who thinks herself a role model to young women. The message is a poor one. It is the responsibility of every citizen to vote ??? those who don???t have no right to complain when things don???t go their way. Someone else who shares their religious choices should enlighten them on this point ??? it would so no good for someone on the outside to say anything. - Quote of the day: When I was born I was so surprised I didn't talk for a year and a half. - Gracie Allen Technorati Tags: vote - political choice - individual responsibility - freedom

10 Reasons Why Vista Isn't Terrific, Just Not That Bad

    Posted: June 26th, 2008, 10:12pm EDT
Author AvatarOver at Gizmodo they have what I believe is one of the best articles I have read about why Vista isn't that bad. What I enjoyed about the article was the way it was written and the choice of wording. Some positive points were almost apologetic in the writers view. There were also 5 things the writer did not like about Vista. So I took a look at some of the ones where the wording was cautious in the description of what the writer liked:
    2. It's the best looking Windows yet.
I agree. Vista Aero is mighty pretty compared to previous versions of Windows. But what I liked best was this one sentence at the bottom of how pretty Vista is:
If you want to disable Aero for certain applications for performance or compatibility reasons, see here.
It's pretty but you might have to turn it off sometimes. Strange!
    3. Games work just about as well as under XP.
    But than there is this:
There's a slight performance degradation under Vista when compared to Windows XP using the exact same hardware. Is it noticeable? Probably, but it's somewhere around the level of 10%.??
If I read this correctly, it can than also be stated that Vista doesn't perform as well XP when it comes to game playing.
    7. User Account Control is useful for some people.
This feature is so great that the writer admits turning UAC off. He goes on to identify who the 'some people' are but admits UAC is a step in the right direction but still needs fixing. Now for the bad stuff, some of which I embrace as well,?? and also dislike in Vista:
    1. Things aren't where they used to be
Have you seen the new 2009 model cars? In order to use the brakes, you need to lower the passenger window, make sure your car radio is tuned to AM station 1040, and have your wipers set to low speed. There are only six steps to accelerate. Every time that Microsoft comes out with something new, the minions in Redmond think it is necessary to bury some of the standard stuff under layers of menu's that the user needs to wade through. Hello! Just because you move something around and change the icon it uses does not make it new! Overall I think you will enjoy the 10 best and 5 worst things about Vista article. But don't take it to serious. It all goes back to one thing and one thing only. If you enjoy using Vista, sticking with XP or use an alternative OS?? you have the perfect OS already. :-) Comments welcome. Source.

Turned out to be the anti-theft sensors between the two front doors. ?? The store wouldn't admit it but within a week, all of the devices that wouldn't work for a year suddenly started working again. It was nice to see amateurs on tv.?? It's not odd to see them performing a public service on their own time with their own equipment, though.???? You keep hearing about all of the emergency services being put into place by Homeland Security?????? ----> (Heil!!!)?? but the only time-tested means of communication during a power failure will be radio. When the hurricanes hit Florida, some counties' only means of communication was volunteer amateur radio operators.?? When the cell phones went down on 9-11, radio didn't. Good folks, those hams. * for anyone interested, the fancy gadgets were two homemade yagis for direction-finding.?? Picture a foot long stick with a few hangers through it, like a mini tv antenna.?? It was pretty funny.

Author AvatarOn July 2, T-Mobile USA is going to launch a service called T-Mobile AtHome. It let customers to place unlimited calls in the US with landlines phones over high speed Internet connection. It plans to cost $10 per month when it comes out. The downside is that customers needs a wireless plan that cost a minimal of $40 a month, and need to buy a T-Mobile Internet router for about $50 which plugs into the home Internet connection and then the customer landline phone plugs into the router. The router also let Wi-Fi -equipped cell phone to use their own wireless router to call out rather than using T-Mobile wireless broadcasting antenna. T-Mobile Internet phone plan is similar to VoIP service like Vonage?? They both provide a additional box to connect to a existing router. Unlike Vonage, T-Mobile solution is to switch?? out the customer's existing router.

Hawaii - Paradise Being Hit Hard By High Prices

    Posted: June 25th, 2008, 9:03am EDT
Author AvatarI was watching CNN yesterday and was surprised to learn just how high prices were heading in Hawaii. Having just been to the islands last October, I thought prices were high than, but now they have skyrocketed out of sight. To add to the high cost of staples, is also the high cost of plane flights which have been hit buy the rising cost of fuel. With Aloha and ATA airlines going out of business and other airlines cutting flights to the island, Hawaii is being hit with a double whammy. Tourism is the life blood of Hawaii and they are dependant on visitors to keep their economy afloat. In the articles it states:
One state senator says Hawaii has a brewing crisis on its hands, and wants the state to be proactive before things get really bad.??
To add to their woes are prices that have hit a new high. Consider these prices:
Imagine going to your local grocery store and paying over $8 for a jar of Jif peanut butter. How about $5.50 for a loaf of white bread, $6.50 for a gallon of milk or $7.19 for a half-gallon of orange juice? ??Which means lettuce is running $2 per pound. Tomatoes are at $6.39 a pound and a 3-pack of red peppers costs $7. That means going without luxuries such as ice cream, which costs about $7.60 per gallon. But when a box of cereal can cost nearly $8, and $7.19 only buys one pack of Kraft American cheese slices, saving money is easier said than done.
Yipes! That's $2 a pound for lettuce not for a head. So what do you think? Will you be visiting the islands any time soon? :-) Comments welcome. Hawaii Tourist Source. Hawaii Food Cost Source.

    Virtual Machines

    Posted: June 25th, 2008, 8:43am EDT

I love virtual machines.  The virtual machines that I have are used for many purposes.  My primary home computer is an early 2008, 15??? MacBook Pro.  It has Mac OS X Leopard as it's primary operating system, Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 in Boot Camp, and Windows XP Professional SP3 in VMware Fusion.  My primary office computer is a Dell OptiPlex 755.  It has Windows Vista Enterprise SP1 as it's primary operating system and Windows XP Professional SP3 in Virtual PC 2007.  I believe that virtual machines are the future of desktop computing.  They allow you to do so much.

At work, I use the virtual machine as a ???sandbox??? so I can test new applications, tweak system settings, and diagnosis problems that my client's may be facing.  Probably 99% of my client's at work are still running Windows XP Professional because Windows Vista isn't completely compatible with our backend, third-party software that we use to install other software.  This is why I keep Windows XP Professional around at work; basically so I can support other people.  The great thing about a ???sandbox??? is if I mess something up or change something that doesn't really help, I can revert the virtual machine back to it's last saved state.  Even if my primary operating system was Windows XP Professional, I would probably still use a ???sandbox??? to help others because my system wouldn't suffer from making changes.

At home, I use the virtual machine so I run software that is not supported on my primary operating system.  For example, over the years, I have accumulated a lot of MSN/Hotmail/Live e-mail accounts.  I do this so I can filter out SPAM so it doesn't all go to my primary e-mail account.  The one piece of software that I used to use to manage all of them was Outlook Express.  It allowed me to check all of the Microsoft e-mail accounts at the same time.  Microsoft decided to take away the feature and forced people to switch to Windows Live Mail desktop to do the same thing.  I add each of the Microsoft e-mail accounts to the program and I can check all of them at the same time, without having to use a web browser.  Microsoft Entourage (the e-mail and calendar application found in Microsoft Office for Mac) doesn't support all of Microsoft's e-mail accounts.  I thought that Microsoft Entourage 2008 would have enabled this but it didn't.  This virtual machine also has Windows Live Writer.  This is a utility that allows writers to use a desktop application to make blog posts.  It's a great utility that I recommend to any blogger.

When I purchased my MacBook Pro at the end of February, I didn't necessarily purchase it because I was tired of Microsoft and the OEMs that use Windows as their operating system.  I purchased it because I wanted something that would allow me to get the most out of my money.  I wanted the ability to legally and easily run multiple operating systems on the same computer.  No OEM or operating system is perfect and I have NOTHING against Microsoft OEMs and NOTHING against Windows Vista.  Sorry I digressed into a rant.

Why do you have virtual machines? Feel free to leave any other comments for others to read. How many of you have a virtual machine?  If you have a virtual machine, how many of you use it to help you, help others with a different operating system then your primary operating system?  How many of you use a virtual machine so you can run different software than what is supported on your primary operating system?  How many of you use a virtual machine as a ???sandbox????  Feel free to leave any other comments for others to read.

FYI: Virtual PC 2007 for Windows is a FREE download.  You just have to bring a copy of Windows or another supported operating system to the table.

Surgeon has License Revoked for Removing Wrong Lung

    Posted: June 25th, 2008, 8:41am EDT
Author AvatarIt's bad enough that Dr. Santusht Perera removed the wrong lung from a surgical patient. He also attempted to conceal his mistake by lying to the patient about his condition, and altering the patient's records. The State Board of Medical Examiners found Dr. Perera guilty of gross negligence, assessed him a mere $81,000.00 in fines, and revoked his medical license temporarily. That's right... temporarily. Under the ruling, Perera can appeal for an early restoration of his medical license after six months. To me, this is "gross negligence" on the part of the Board of Medical Examiners. Let's get this straight in our heads. The patient had a tumor on his left lung that was supposed to be removed. Instead, Dr. Perera cut out part of his RIGHT lung.. the healthy one. This leaves the tumor on the left lung, of course. This will significantly reduce the number of viable options for this man to live out a healthy life. Not only did the doctor remove the wrong lung, he also lied to the patient to cover his ass. He told the patient that he discovered a a life-threatening tumor on that right lung, and altered the medical records accordingly. This is disgusting. We trust our doctors to perform the proper procedures. Yes, mistakes can be made, as doctors are humans too. However, the doctor should have done the right thing and admitted his error... instead of lying and trying to cover himself. My guess is that he was too worried over being sued, instead of the patient that he took an oath to practice medicine with ETHICS. Does the truth mean nothing? This "doctor" should not be allowed to ever practice medicine again, in my mind. I simply cannot believe that the Board would give out such a minor slap on the wrist for something so major. Just goes to show you that even those whose Ethics are supposedly of the highest caliber will stand for one of their own kind.. even when they should be casting the first stone.

Do you Believe in the Death Penalty?

    Posted: June 25th, 2008, 8:10am EDT
Author AvatarI'm not writing this post to debate the issue itself, or whether or not you believe. This post is geared towards people who DO believe in it already, for convicted murderers. If you believe the death penalty is appropriate for people who kill others, how do you feel about child rapists? In a recent CNN article, it is reported that:
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 Wednesday that child rapists cannot be executed, concluding capital punishment can be applied only against murderers. The ruling stemmed from the case of Patrick Kennedy, who appealed the 2003 death sentence he received in Louisiana after being convicted of raping his 8-year-old stepdaughter. Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion that execution in this case would violate the Eighth Amendment's prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment, citing "evolving standards of decency" in the United States.
I beg to differ. Cruel and unusual punishment? How much more cruel and unusual does it get than a grown man brutally raping his 8-year-old stepdaughter... or ANY child, for that matter? I never used to believe in the death penalty. Growing up, I was vehemently against it. In High School, I was forced to debate FOR it, for a hefty part of my grade. I stood my ground, and refused to do so. The instructor ended up allowing me to change my debate, contrary to what she had said at the beginning. She stated she was proud of me for standing up for what I believed in, despite facing a possible failing grade. That changed when Timothy Buss murdered Christopher Meyer. You see, I know this monster. I grew up with him. My sister Karen was Tara Sue Huffman's best friend. Who is Tara Sue? She is the first person that Timothy brutally raped and murdered. We were very little at the time (Tara Sue and my sister were just 5 years old), growing up in a period when kids were allowed to run around the neighborhood without supervision. What happened to Tara Sue could have been my sister or I had we been the ones to cross the monster's path that day. Since Timothy was only 12 at the time, he served only 12 years. While in prison, he bragged about Tara Sue's murder. Less than two years after his release, he kidnapped, sexually mutilated and stabbed 9-year-old Christopher more than 50 times, then buried him in a shallow grave in the state park. The day of his sentencing, I was glued to the television, waiting to hear. Right up until that moment, I thought I still didn't believe in the death penalty. However, when the special news report broke in and announced that the jury had sentenced Timothy to die by lethal injection, I literally stood up and cheered LOUDLY. That day, and those events, changed my life in many ways. So how does this connect to what's happening with this new monster? I still believe that the death penalty is the only option for some of these people... especially those who have committed heinous crimes against children. I know I will receive flames from a lot of people for this post, especially in light of my religious beliefs. However, we all know that things that happen to us (directly or indirectly) in our lives shape our future selves and beliefs. It's ok if you disagree with me, it's ok if you think I am wrong. I ask, however, that you disagree in an acceptable manner. Any comments that are offensive or inflammatory will be deleted. Debate... don't attack.

Bill Gates Sends Angry Email to Microsoft

    Posted: June 25th, 2008, 8:02am EDT

(Disclaimer this isn't a new message but one from 2003)

Oh boy Bill Gates retirement is drawing near and everyone is writing about their favorite things about him, making jokes, and so forth. Well he Seattle P-I is doing a fine job of reporting about Bill Gates. The company found an old email from Bill Gates?? to the Microsoft Usability team about trying to download Movie Maker.

Here is the entire email, its pretty long.

    From: Bill Gates
    Sent: Wednesday, January 15, 2003 10:05 AM
    To: Jim Allchin
Cc: Chris Jones (WINDOWS); Bharat Shah (NT); Joe Peterson; Will Poole; Brian Valentine; Anoop Gupta (RESEARCH)
Subject: Windows Usability Systematic degradation flame

I am quite disappointed at how Windows Usability has been going backwards and the program management groups don???t drive usability issues.

Let me give you my experience from yesterday.

I decided to download (Moviemaker) and buy the Digital Plus pack ??? so I went to Microsoft.com. They have a download place so I went there.

The first 5 times I used the site it timed out while trying to bring up the download page. Then after an 8 second delay I got it to come up.

This site is so slow it is unusable.

It wasn???t in the top 5 so I expanded the other 45.

These 45 names are totally confusing. These names make stuff like: C:Documents and SettingsbillgMy DocumentsMy Pictures seem clear.

They are not filtered by the system ??? and so many of the things are strange.

I tried scoping to Media stuff. Still no moviemaker. I typed in movie. Nothing. I typed in movie maker. Nothing.

So I gave up and sent mail to Amir saying - where is this Moviemaker download? Does it exist?

So they told me that using the download page to download something was not something they anticipated.

They told me to go to the main page search button and type movie maker (not moviemaker!).

I tried that. The site was pathetically slow but after 6 seconds of waiting up it came.

I thought for sure now I would see a button to just go do the download.

In fact it is more like a puzzle that you get to solve. It told me to go to Windows Update and do a bunch of incantations.

This struck me as completely odd. Why should I have to go somewhere else and do a scan to download moviemaker?

So I went to Windows update. Windows Update decides I need to download a bunch of controls. (Not) just once but multiple times where I get to see weird dialog boxes.

Doesn???t Windows update know some key to talk to Windows?

Then I did the scan. This took quite some time and I was told it was critical for me to download 17megs of stuff.

This is after I was told we were doing delta patches to things but instead just to get 6 things that are labeled in the SCARIEST possible way I had to download 17meg.

So I did the download. That part was fast. Then it wanted to do an install. This took 6 minutes and the machine was so slow I couldn???t use it for anything else during this time.

What the heck is going on during those 6 minutes? That is crazy. This is after the download was finished.

Then it told me to reboot my machine. Why should I do that? I reboot every night ??? why should I reboot at that time?

So I did the reboot because it INSISTED on it. Of course that meant completely getting rid of all my Outlook state.

So I got back up and running and went to Windows Updale again. I forgot why I was in Windows Update at all since all I wanted was to get Moviemaker.

So I went back to Microsoft.com and looked at the instructions. I have to click on a folder called WindowsXP. Why should I do that? Windows Update knows I am on Windows XP.

What does it mean to have to click on that folder? So I get a bunch of confusing stuff but sure enough one of them is Moviemaker.

So I do the download. The download is fast but the Install takes many minutes. Amazing how slow this thing is.

At some point I get told I need to go get Windows Media Series 9 to download.

So I decide I will go do that. This time I get dialogs saying things like "Open" or "Save". No guidance in the instructions which to do. I have no clue which to do.

The download is fast and the install takes 7 minutes for this thing.

So now I think I am going to have Moviemaker. I go to my add/remove programs place to make sure it is there.

    It is not there.

What is there? The following garbage is there. Microsoft Autoupdate Exclusive test package, Microsoft Autoupdate Reboot test package, Microsoft Autoupdate testpackage1. Microsoft AUtoupdate testpackage2, Microsoft Autoupdate Test package3.

Someone decided to trash the one part of Windows that was usable? The file system is no longer usable. The registry is not usable. This program listing was one sane place but now it is all crapped up.

But that is just the start of the crap. Later I have listed things like Windows XP Hotfix see Q329048 for more information. What is Q329048? Why are these series of patches listed here? Some of the patches just things like Q810655 instead of saying see Q329048 for more information.

    What an absolute mess.

Moviemaker is just not there at all.

So I give up on Moviemaker and decide to download the Digital Plus Package.

I get told I need to go enter a bunch of information about myself.

I enter it all in and because it decides I have mistyped something I have to try again. Of course it has cleared out most of what I typed.

I try (typing) the right stuff in 5 times and it just keeps clearing things out for me to type them in again.

So after more than an hour of craziness and making my programs list garbage and being scared and seeing that Microsoft.com is a terrible website I haven???t run Moviemaker and I haven???t got the plus package.

The lack of attention to usability represented by these experiences blows my mind. I thought we had reached a low with Windows Network places or the messages I get when I try to use 802.11. (don???t you just love that root certificate message?)

When I really get to use the stuff I am sure I will have more feedback.???

Is it just me or does this make Bill Gates seem more human? Its nice to hear that the man himself even has some WTF moments when trying to deal Microsoft products. Now only if we can find an email or two he sent to them about Vista.

Kudos to Seattle P-I for finding this.

    Editing Outsourced to India

    Posted: June 25th, 2008, 7:49am EDT
Author AvatarThe outsourcing trend is coming to the print media. It may be one of the strongest indicators that advertising revenue and circulation are dropping. In a struggling economy, one newspaper is looking to India for editing services: "An Indian company will take over copy editing duties for some stories published in The Orange County Register and will handle page layout for a community newspaper at the company that owns the Pulitzer Prize-winning daily, the newspaper confirmed Tuesday." link: OC Register to outsource some editing to India The editing may be good quality but it will not have the nuances of someone from the local community. At the beginning of this decade, such steps in the print media was mere speculation. Now, for the publications in the smaller markets, such strategies may be a means of surviving a bit longer in competing with the internet. Catherine Forsythe

    Why Dogs Eat Grass

    Posted: June 25th, 2008, 6:00am EDT
Author AvatarPica is a craving for unnatural, non-food items. Dogs do enjoy their grass and grass-eating is not always viewed as pica. However, if your dog eats grass excessively and as more than a passing snack, the habit may escalate into a pica. No one really knows why dogs eat grass ??? it is one of the mysteries of dogs. That being said, it is unlikely that only one reason exists. Some dogs likely eat grass because they simply like the taste, others may do it to provide further bulk to their diet should they perceive this to be lacking, and still others likely eat grass to try and settle or clear an upset stomach. If your pet is on a good quality diet, has regular stools, and isn't showing other health concerns, grass-eating is unlikely to be a problem. You may want to try and curtail the behaviour to avoid it from becoming a problem by keeping your lawn cut short and free of grass clippings and leaves and providing your dog with an outdoor toy for its chewing behaviour. One concern is that some public parks, and perhaps your own lawn, have had a chemical spray to control for weeds. The obvious concern is the dog ingesting these chemicals and the cumulative effects over the weeks. If you are at all in doubt, take your dog to your veterinarian for a thorough physical examination and a review of its current diet and dietary needs. Your veterinarian may suggest some behaviourial training to stop the grass eating behaviour. This DogReader space will have some training suggestions tomorrow. Catherine Forsythe

Does Dell Really Make The 'World's Most Secure Notebook'?

    Posted: June 25th, 2008, 5:09am EDT
Author AvatarDell has a new advertising slogan in which it states: 'Worlds Most Secure Notebook' . The folks over at Lenovo seem to have taken Dell to task and asked the National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus to see what they thought. In their opinion NAD says that:
Advertising for Dell products was challenged by Lenovo Computers, the maker of competing computers. NAD, the advertising industry???s self-regulatory forum, examined claims that appeared in print advertising, in a press release and on Dell???s Website, including:
??? ???World???s Most Secure Notebooks??? ??? ???World???s Most Secure Commercial Notebooks??? ??? ???World???s Most Manageable Energy Efficient Commercial Desktop Ever.??? ??? ???The most flexible approach to systems management??? ??? Most Flexible Systems Management and Serviceable Products.???
On the basis of the evidence in the record, NAD determined that advertiser demonstrated that it offered features of computer security that were both unique and meaningful to consumers. However, it also determined that the broad claim ???World???s Most Secure??? was not adequately supported and was appropriately discontinued. NAD determined that although the advertiser had a reasonable basis for its precise claims relating to the compilation of the FDE Encryption Solution components, the advertiser should refrain from making broad superiority claims where it had not sufficiently established that its competitors??? products provided less security.
So Dell does have a secure system, but not just the world's most secure. Comments welcome. Source.

What do you use to Twitter?

    Posted: June 25th, 2008, 4:36am EDT
Author AvatarTwitter is slowly becoming one of the more powerful ways to pass information to a wide array of people and to also find out what your friends and family are doing. For those of us who use Twitter it is well known that the webpage, twitter.com, can at times be extremely slow to use. So instead of using the actual website we use different applications, some web-based, to send our tweets. There are two really great services out there you can use, Twitterific and Ping.FM. Twitterific is a Mac OS X application that installs on your computer and allows you to see your friends tweets and allows you to send tweets. The program is free as long as you can deal with advertisements and there is a paid version where you can pay to remove the ads. I like the free version just find and have no problems with the ads, but there are problems. I often get this error while trying to download tweets, Twitter returned a "bad request" error. This happens when you exceed 70 requests per hour. Avoid running other Twitter applications or refreshing too frequently. The other way, my preferred way, to ping is Ping.fm. Its a website that lets you send tweets, and a whole lot more. The website allows you to send updates to more than one website. For example I have my Facebook, Tumblr, and Twitter all set up so all I have to do is type my status update once and it gets pushed to all of the websites. The service is straightforward and easy to get started on.The website is in private beta and you will need a code to get in. Because I am a nice guy here is the current code (as of 6/25) "pingofpings" Overall I prefer to use ping.fm over Twitterific. So what service do you use to Twitter? Twitterific Ping.fm

Are New Yorkers Out to Lunch?

    Posted: June 25th, 2008, 4:27am EDT
Author AvatarOr do they simply elect Orwellian leaders who wish to commandeer the public???s powers of choice? Certainly they elect people who have little idea of how to accomplish things in a way that yields the desired results. A week ago we read about the Attorney General of New York using subtle threats against Verizon and others who would not bend to his will, and remove an entire hierarchy of Usenet from their servers. Now the New York State Senate is trying to pass another bill regarding video games and game consoles, trying to usurp the power of parents, and enforce the quaint notion that the government should place its judgement above that of its people.?? The article shows why the idea is both bad and superfluous, It also shows that many poorly thought out schemes have little chance of efficacy. This sort of legislation shouldn???t even pass the Homer Simpson test (Doh!), much less take up any time in the legal system that certainly has better things to try to remedy. from Ars Technica
Trying to pass legislation that impacts how games can be sold or what has to be put on them is a popular and expensive way of sending the message that you're concerned about the issues that affect the youth of today. Although every law attempted has gone down in flames, and has cost taxpayers at least $1 million through the years, politicians continue to line up to give it a go. The newest bill is A11717, proposed by Assemblyman Joseph Lentol, and it has already passed through the New York State Assembly. Now it's on to the State Senate. It's a familiar story, but in this case the New York government is asking for things the industry is already doing. States continue losing streak with game legislation Massachusetts lawmakers debate ill-advised video game law ESA awarded legal fees from fight against Michigan game law Gamers get political action group The legislation would require game consoles to include parental locks for mature content but, while this sounds good on paper, every current-generation console already has parental controls. Not only that, but the ESRB has done a great job of getting the word out on how to use said controls. The bill also wants to force games to show their ESRB ratings on the cover of the title, which is also something that is done industry-wide. Every game sold at retail has the ESRB rating on the front cover, with more detailed information on what content the game includes on the back of the box. Given that industry compliance on showing the ratings on games is already at 100 percent, it's unclear what the law would achieve.
Republican or Democrat, Liberal or Conservative, the elected officials in this country need to take a long look at the job they are put in place to do. There are entirely too many laws being written, and too many elected officials judging their performance by how much hack legislation they are capable of getting by the other side. Perhaps their should be much more filibustering in all the legislative houses ??? at least that might give these bad laws a chance to be exposed to an audience that is forced to think, long and hard, before adding unnecessary bulk to the codes we all live by. No one should doubt that these legislator???s hearts are in the right place, but everyone should question where their heads are; and ask, politely, for these servants of the people to pull them out.?? - Technorati Tags: Orwellian - video games - legislation - ESRB - soapbox

    Backing Up with Social Networking

Author AvatarHaving a backup of photos and videos is something that almost every person dreams of having.?? The security of know that your photos will be safe if something happens to you computer is a definite pro.?? However, where do you store you files??? Is the place secure, reliable and accessible?
As part of the new release, all users (even unpaid ones) will be given access to Multiply's new media upload application that's based on Adobe's AIR platform (you'll be able to use it on Windows, Mac, and Linux). The application will monitor designated folders on a user's computer, and will automatically upload new photos and video in the background as soon as they're added.?? Link: Multiply: The Social Network That Backs Up...
A new social network that is geared towards the adults, instead of the kids.?? The service sounds great, and for $20 dollars a year, having a backup of my media would be great.?? However, I wonder how secure the data would be.?? Would anyone be allowed to view it??? Only my friends??? Can I make it so no one can view it??? I am tempted to use the service as a backup, and not as a social network. Good concept, let's see how it plays out, Comments welcome, Justin Capasso

Microsoft Bob Was Distributed With Every Copy Of XP

    Posted: June 25th, 2008, 4:01am EDT
Author AvatarI just got finished reading an interesting article by Raymand Chen, who wrote an article for TechNet magazine, in the Windows Confidential Column. He titled the piece 'History Taking Up Space' in which he describes how Microsoft Bob became a part of Windows XP. He also explained what Microsoft Bob was when it was first introduced. For those of who missed Bob, it sat on top of Windows 3.1 and its purpose was to make using a computer simpler. What it turned out to be was a PITA that nobody liked nor wanted. Bob died a peaceful death until Bob got a second lease on life when Windows XP was introduced. According to the article:
When you intend to distribute your software on a CD, one thing you have to worry about is making sure your product actually fits on a single CD. Fortunately, it so happened that even after taking into account the disk space required for translations, support tools, and the other stuff that has to go onto the Windows XP CD, there was still about 30 megabytes of storage capacity remaining. The people who worry about these sorts of things figured, well, we already paid for all that storage capacity on the CD so we might as well use it, right? The result was a rather feeble attempt to slow down the people who like to make illegal copies of Windows. Somebody decided to fill that extra capacity on the CD with dummy data and to have the Windows Setup program verify that the dummy data was still there. This, the logic went, would force people downloading a copy of the CD image to download an additional thirty or so megabytes of data. Remember, this was back in the day when "broadband" hadn't yet become a household word and mainstream users were using dial-up connections. Having to transfer an additional thirty megabytes of data over a 56Kb modem was a bit of an obstacle to slow users down???not that it would slow them down much by today's standards. ?? The person who was asked to implement this check needed a source for the dummy data. Now, he could have just called the CryptGenRandom function to generate 30 megabytes of cryptographically random bytes, but where's the fun in that? Instead, he dug through the archives and found a copy of Microsoft Bob. He took all the floppy disk images and combined them into one big file. The contents of the Microsoft Bob floppy disk images are not particularly random, so he decided to scramble up the data by encrypting it. When it came time to enter the encryption key, he just smashed his hand haphazardly across the keyboard and out came an encrypted copy of Microsoft Bob. That's what went into the unused space as ballast data on the Windows XP CD. ?? In the end, Windows XP became the most effective Microsoft Bob deployment tool ever developed. And if you go way back into your closet, dig out your copy of Windows XP, and can somehow channel the right spirits to mash your hands on the keyboard in exactly the right way, then out of your encryption program will come a copy of Microsoft Bob.
So there you have it. A piece of Microsoft history that I knew you wouldn't be able to live without. This is blogging at it's best! :-) Comments welcome. Source.

    Are Bloggers Wannabe Journalists?

    Posted: June 25th, 2008, 3:28am EDT
    Author Avatar

I was over at SF Gate reading an article about the Microsoft-Yahoo on again, off again relationship when I spotted this:

The only thing clear is that if journalists - and bloggers who consider themselves journalists - are supposed to be providing clarity on the situation, they're failing miserably.

That one comment, and bloggers who consider themselves journalists, caught my eye. I personally have never considered myself a journalist by any sense of the word. I am a blogger, plain and simple. I post what I believe will interest my readers and make comments as to what I think.

I believe my position is not to report the facts, but to comment on the facts as presented by others. To keep my readers informed as to what is new and possibly important to them.

Because of this blogger-reader relationship, you may have noticed that I have not even mentioned anything about the Microsoft and Yahoo fiasco. I personally believe that the subject is a bunch of BS that generates a huge amount of writing by the so called ???journalists??? because they have to write about something or they don???t get paid. Bloggers pick this up because they think it is important to the masses because some ???journalist??? writes about it.

So if I don???t give a rat's ass about whether Microsoft buys Yahoo or not, excuse me! My personal opinion is that Google will continue to kick booty no matter what Microsoft does. Google owns search, plain and simple. At least for now. :-)

    Comments welcome.

    Source.

PS Thanks to Verne Kopytoff & Deborah Gage for the SF Gate article. It gave me a piece to write about without even having to get into the boring Microsoft-Yahoo deal or no deal that ???journalists??? love to write about.

Did my computer memory do that?

    Posted: June 25th, 2008, 3:18am EDT
    Author Avatar

Alright we are going to roll up our sleeves and get a little dirty. Computer memory: without it the computer will not run, with it the computer might go haywire. It can cause enough problems with your computer you want to pull your hair out. Here is my take on memory and a little bit of what I know. I do not have the hours in a day to write about all I know so I will hit the highlights and hope some of it sticks. This is not for the weak of heart and I am not bashing on people, just offering my insight to the subject. If this helps you please let me know.

If you are building a new computer and it is acting weird and will not boot up right, you get a great idea from a forum post and pull one of the memory modules out and the system boots up fine, the memory module you pulled out must be bad right. Not so fast there speedy, the odds you pulled out the bad module on the first try in 1 in 999,999 or 1 in 4. There can be lots of reasons why a new system build could go haywire. First thing you need to do is test the memory with memtest and if the memory passes then you can rule it out. I have heard all the horror stories about what people thought were memory issues and it winds up being something else. First thing you always do before loading Windows whatever on a new computer is test the memory so there isn???t any data corruption. So let???s dig a little deeper to see what could cause the before mentioned problem. You take out one module and the system boots. Shut the system down and take out the module currently in there and install the one you took out. If the system boots fine with that one then you have a possible power supply issue or another component is the culprit. Do not be so quick to point the ugly finger at memory. Forums are a great place to gather information and possible fixes for computer issues but they should never be taken as 100% true or accurate. What worked for one person may not work for you.

Someone decides to buy super fast DDR2 1066MHz memory for his computer because his/her buddy said get the fastest stuff out there. This person installs the new memory and low and behold the memory does not run at 1066MHz, it is running at 800MHz. Rats, the memory is not running at its rated speed so it must be bad right? Well you should have checked what processor you have and verified it has a front side bus speed equal to the memory. If the processor has a FSB (Front Side Bus) speed of 800MHz, your memory will run at 800MHz unless you can unlink the memory or you put the memory in a ratio. I won???t go into ratios that would be a whole new post. Please, before you buy memory for your computer, make sure to find out the FBS of the processor and if there are any limitations for the motherboard.

I hear this all the time; I read on a forum that running the memory at command rate 1T versus 2T is faster. What?? Right, one timing will change how fast memory works? No it won???t, changing one value in the BIOS because someone said that will make the memory faster, is full of it. I have heard arguments on both sides and basically 1T versus 2T make almost no difference at all. If running 1T makes the system unstable then run 2T. The command rate is not where the speed is, having a lower CAS latency takes precedence over command rate. I ran tests with both configurations and I cannot see an advantage.

I read on a forum that there were two people who had the same motherboard and bought the same memory, person A was able to over clock their memory 200MHz faster than person B. So person B thought they had bad memory and exchanged the memory for a new pair that did the same thing. What is wrong? This is pretty easy to explain, if two of the exact same motherboards came off the assembly line they will not act the same. There is no way you can have an exact twin when it comes to electronics. They can be close but there will be always be something different. This could be considered a weak explanation but I do not work for a manufacturer so I do not have the inside scoop.

All I ask is that you spend some time reading the right articles about memory and over clocking before visiting forums to get misguided information.

Well I guess that is it for this post, if you have any constructive criticism let me have.

    Until next time,

    Kineo

    Cell Phone Bill Savings

    Posted: June 25th, 2008, 2:37am EDT
Author AvatarEvery day at work I see cell phone bills that are higher than they need to be, allot of them over due and close to disconnection.?? Here are a few tips that I have learned over the years to lower your cell phone bill. RESPECT YOUR RATE PLAN Your rate plan is probably the most important part of your cell phone bill and going over your minutes can cost you alot of money.?? Most plans charge $0.40 for every minute you go over.?? This adds up quickly to hundreds of dollars if you're not careful.?? Know your usage and keep an eye on your minutes.?? Most companies now have free text messages that will tell you how many minutes you have left.?? Know your account's "bill cycle" date. That is, the date your bill cuts and your minutes reset back to the full amount for your plan.?? If you find you are always going over your minutes, up your plan to the next level.?? Conversely, if you find you never use all of your minutes, lower the plan if possible. If you do change your plan, make it effective on your bill cycle date.?? This will prevent pro-rated charges for a partial month. TEXT MESSAGING Text messaging has become more and more popular over the years, especially for kids and they can be addictive.?? My suggestion is get a text messaging plan if you use them at all.?? My company has a 200 messaging plan for $5.00.?? This allows me 200 messages without worrying about getting charged $0.15 for every text message sent AND received or $0.25 for every Picture Message.?? If you do not want to use messaging, call your provider and put a block on your line for those services.?? This will prevent any "spam" messages or people sending you text messages, each of which you get charged for, even if you don't want them. DATA (WEB SURFING) Cell phone companies are targeting this service to increase revenue.?? It is a huge money maker for them and they push it on all cell phones.?? Pay Per Use is generally put on a new account by default.?? This costs a minimum of $0.025 per kilobyte.?? This can cost you $1.00 or more for every web page you look at.?? Unless you are some kind of "Super Geek" like Chris Pirillo, stick to your home internet service and block the service on your cell phone.?? If you do use the data service, be sure to get an unlimited package for a flat rate.?? Keep in mind the iPhone requires an unlimited data plan, you have no choice there. BUSINESS EXPENCE? If you have your own business, or use your cell phone regularly for your job, look into claiming it on your taxes.?? You can put money back in your pocket at the end of the year.?? Plus, you can get extra discounts on cell phone devices if you are listed as a small business account. ASK AND YOU SHALL RECEIVE This one is little known and rarely used by customers.?? Think your paying too much for your cell phone??? Call the company and tell them you would like to cancel your account.?? You will be transferred to a "Customer Relations" team (We call it the "Save Team" at work).?? There you will be offered plans and services not advertised.?? The cell phone business is very competitive and companies want to keep your business, sometimes even at a loss of revenue.?? If you don't think what they offer is fair, negotiate.?? You will be surprised at what a company is willing to give you to keep you as a customer.?? This works especially well if your contract is up. ROAMING This is another area where cell phone companies make a killing in revenue.?? If you are planning to go overseas, call your provider a week or so before hand and ask to have your phone "unlocked".?? Most companies will do this as long as you have had an active account for 6 months and are going to travel overseas.?? This will allow you to purchase a local SIM card in the country you are visiting and save allot of money.?? International roaming charges are very high and even a few minutes use can run into big money.?? By law, a company must give you the unlock code for any reason if you have fulfilled your contract.?? Keep in mind this rule excludes the iPhone. As you can see, by simply applying yourself a little bit, you can literally save a few hundred dollars per year in regards to your cell phone use. Sure, it???s a cool little gadget, but at the end of the day, your cell phone will not put food on your table and pay your rising gas expenses! Prioritize & manage your cell phone necessities and make it a habit to not spend more than you should. You???ll be happy you did at the end of the year.

    iPhone 2.0 Firmware This Friday?

    Posted: June 25th, 2008, 1:24am EDT
Author AvatarAccording to a sources inside the Cupertino's iPhone software development effort, it is "highly probable" that the iPhone 2.0 Golden Master will hit this Friday. The final version could arrive two weeks before the introduction of the new iPhone 3G and just in time for the promised June release. The iPhone 2.0 operating system Golden Master will follow the release of build 345, which has seen the activation of two code-signing and encryption features not previously available. Gizmodo This is good news for us iPhone/iPod Touch owners out there. If this hits Friday, as it is rumored, Apple will be on target with their targeted June release that they announced at WWDC. Apple has been known to push some products back a week or two of their original plan but for everyone who owns a iPhone or iPod Touch we cannot wait another day. Assuming the firmware hits Friday I will have a full review on the iPod Touch 2.0. Also do not buy an iPod Touch until the firmware hits, trust me. Source

When It Comes To Vista, Who Do You Believe - The Inquirer or Adrian Kingsley-Hughes?

    Posted: June 25th, 2008, 12:52am EDT
Author AvatarYou gotta love it! When it comes to Microsoft's operating system Vista, the beat goes on and on. No sooner do you think that everything is settling down and that the two Vista camps [love it - hate it] have disappeared, up jumps the devil once again. But this time the game and comparisons are different. Over at the Inquirer, they have an article based on some secret sauce stuff [a memo], that Intel has no intention of ever using Vista. The mighty chip maker it alleges has no inclination on using a broken OS. That has gotta hurt the boys up in Redmond. It also states that:
When a company as tech savvy as Intel, with full source code access and having written several large chunks of the OS, says get stuffed, you know you have a problem. Well, everyone knows MS has a problem, but it is nice to see it codified in such a black and white way though. Reassuring, like a warm cup of tea, or a public kick to the corporate crown jewels. The real question is what are they going to use? The official answer is 'nothing yet', the one where they try not to offend is 'likely Windows 7', delivered with a pained smile. Since that is shaping up to be Me II SP1a, I am not sure Intel will bite there either unless they suddenly develop a GPU that can run it in that time frame.
    And then this:
In the end, you have Intel flipping MS the bird, and telling them what they already know, Vista in undeployable by anyone with a grain of common sense. The impressive thing is that it just might lead to a waving off of MS entirely, they are the underdog for the next round of upgrades.
OUCH! That has to sting as well. I thought Intel and Microsoft were good buds. Andrian Kingsley-Hughes has a different take on Vista. He now believe that Vista is ready for prime time. With SP1 and the latest fixes & patches that Microsoft has pumped out, that Vista is finally a ........ well here is what he says:
??It???s my believe that Windows Vista is about as stable and reliable as it???s going to be, and in my experience, Vista is as robust as XP, if not more so. Yes, it took time (maybe more time than it should) but the reliability is now there.
If Vista is as stable and reliable as XP is, than why is Intel reluctant to employ it? What do you think? Comments welcome. Inquirer source. Adrian Kingleys-Hughes source.

Olympics 'net Coverage from NBC - Microsoft Locks it Down

    Posted: June 23rd, 2008, 6:30pm EDT
Author AvatarAfter announcing that NBC will offer 'Olympics on the Go' download service for the Beijing Olympics in a few weeks, it spoils the idea for many who aren't users of the Vista operating system or happen to have Microsoft's Silverlight?? software installed. from Ars Technica
NBC announced two significant technology partnerships with Microsoft and Wavexpress today to provide 2008 Olympics coverage over the web. The new initiatives embody a natural evolution for Olympics coverage considering the times???but they're available only to users of Vista or Silverlight. Powered by Wavexpress' TVTonic Internet video service and client, NBC Olympics on the Go will allow owners of Media-Center-capable Windows Vista PCs (that's Home Premium and Ultimate) to download "up-to-HD" coverage on a sport-by-sport basis. Users can chose from a number of channels in Wavexpress' TVTonic client that NBC's coverage of the Beijing Games will be categorized into, and the NBC Olympics on the Go client will be able to access event coverage roughly 12 hours after an event ends. Ars Technica confirmed with Wavexpress that users will not be able to keep downloaded coverage indefinitely, though videos will remain playable at least for the duration of the games.
Right away, the money makers must subvert one of the positives of the Olympics, keeping memories of the best of human endeavors - making money on memories is more important, so that anyone who wishes to keep a personal copy is out of luck. Never mind that the DVDs that will be for sale may not cover the event cherished, or offer only incomplete viewing.
In addition to going Vista-only for this downloadable Olympics coverage, NBC will be cross-promoting the MSN brand on NBCOlympics.com and featuring Olympics coverage prominently on MSN.com. As Bill Gates announced at CES back in January, all video at the NBC Olympics site requires Silverlight, Microsoft's rich web application and video streaming technology that competes with Adobe's market-dominant Fla
